High Quality Lancashire Loam Soil
What is Loam soil?
Loam soils are a mixture of sand, silt and clay that are combined to avoid the negative effects of each type. These soils are fertile, easy to work with and provide good drainage. Depending on their predominant composition they can be either sandy or clay loam. The great thing about the loam we source here in Lancashire is that it is a light friable sand based loam, As these soils are a perfect balance of soil particles, they are considered to be a gardeners best friend, but still benefit from topping up with additional organic matter.
Wait, it gets better!
Not only is our Loam some of the best available in the country but we actually source it from lagoon excavations on farms which means that it is virgin soil that reduces the likelihood that it has been exposed to any herbicides or man made fertilisers and it means that it has not been intensively farmed and worn out like the top layer of farm soil that most suppliers use creating a need for crop rotation and added fertiliser.
We Then Turbo Charge the Topsoil
The Final part of manufacturing our product comes by adding a potent blend of Lancashire sourced organic composts, always packed full of natural goodness and ALWAYS MADE IN LANCASHIRE! this is the point in which it becomes High Performance Topsoil!
We supply 3 grades below, LT Classic which is a 70/30 mix and a must for under new lawns and seeding and general flower bed and shrub planting, LT Fruit & veg mix this is typically 60/40 and then we sell our LT Soil Conditioner This is a strong soil improver designed for digging into heavy stiff tired ground and is a real powerhouse of a blend made up of approx. 25% sand loam and 75% organic matter.
Special Soil Requires Special Measures
Every aspect of our production is specialised, whilst most suppliers blend there soil and compost together by tipping it in a pile and mixing it with a digger we have invested in meal mixing machine that Augers the mix, a process that we call fine blending, see when you add compost to the loam it is a trade off because you need that shot of natural fertiliser to ensure the last few inches of ground are in an organic state but at the same time it does take away some of the friability and powder like texture of the loam, this method we have found helps to combat the effect somewhat.
Another thing we do is we test every batch of loam so we know exactly how much organic material is required an we adjust to suit so for example if we get a batch of loam that is already carrying quite high levels of total N and Potash then we will taper the compost down to maybe 20 or 25 % for that batch of LT Classic or 35% for the LT Fruit & Veg Mix , this is also important because there is a fine line with the organic material, if you do not use enough then your mix is not strong enough but at the same time if you use to much then you have a batch of soil on your hands that is to strong and you can cause root burn and accelerated plant and veg growth.
